My grandparents fled China during the Chinese Revolution to a tiny remote Taiwanese military island outpost off the coast of China where fishermen often disappeared at sea. As an island battered with typhoons and Chinese invaders next door, Taiwanese people have had a long history of aversion of the sea. For decades post WW2 until 1987, the Taiwanese Government had also restricted coastline access for fear of invasion by the mainland communist regime. Since the opening of beach access, Taiwan has seen a huge growth in surf culture as today's young generation flock to old rural fishing villages - surfing alongside fishing boats.
